The Book Of Symbol 9...

Shape-Shifting

In the very earliest time, when both people and animals lived on earth,
a person could become an animal if he wanted to and an animal
could become a human being.
Sometimes they were people and sometimes animals and sometimes animals and there was no difference.
All spoke the same language. That was the time when words were like magic.
The human mind had mysterious powers.
...
Nobody could explain this: That's the way it was.
- Translated from Inuit by Edward Field

Encompassing both dangerous borderline confusion, and the transcendent experience of the essential unity of being, shape-shifting symbolizes psyche in flux and the coincident psychology of altered states of consciousness. The world is interconnected and always changing; that is their magic. Shamans, tricksters, witches, jinns, druids, gods and heroes with an affinity for "deconstruction and reconstruction" share the ability to separate and regroup elements of a psychological process, ultimately in service of renewal.
This human-animal composite may depict the
supernatural kinship of human and animal
that is experienced in the ecstatic trance of shamanism. Rock
painting by the Sun Bushmen, South Africa.

This is expressed in the ancient and ubiquitous belief in humanity's power to change into animals at will or at junctures in the cycles of nature. This can be actual bodily change or passage of the soul into an animal, while the human body remains in an altered state of awareness, asleep or in dream time. Werewolves and witches' familiars exemplify this ritual assumption of animal instinct, as do shamans and practitioners of altered trance-states. In one image were-jaguar rises in the ecstatic trance of shamanism, partaking in the unity of human and beast (Furst, 68ff). Herein, one can accomplish the seemingly impossible: stalk lovers as did Zeus in swan or bull form (EoR, 13:225), or escape enemies by transforming into magical salmon or selkies of Celtic myth. One might become invisible, or create strategic confusion or deception like Native American trickster Coyote, or experience elements hostile to humans: air, fire, and water. The Norse Odin obtained unusual information from the Otherworld as a bird. The Celtic hero Cuchulainn transformed himself into a raging beast to fight more effectively for his countrymen. A less threatening and more usual shift is into the West African "bush-soul," one's animal spirit. Although part of the amoral, nonrational psyche, which escapes the ethics of relatedness, shape-shifting carries responsibility and consequences. Wounds suffered in the animal body are thought to be reproduced correspondingly in the restored human body.
Drawn during his confinement in the psychiatric
clinic of Heidelberg, the art metalworker Franz Karl
Buhler may have depicted the permeability of identity and the shape-shifting
of the inner world, most pronounced during mental illness. The Prinzhorn Collection, 1900-16, Germany.

Unlike metamorphosis, in shape-shifting, there is no progressive development, but a fluid slide into one or another aspect of the psyche; temporary, protean and intended to hide as much as to reveal. Unlike complete transformation, shape-shifting doesn't alter essentials but portrays the pluralistic, polymorphic, "alternative reality" of what exists. In fact, shape-shifters have an antipathy to the "truth" of a static form, preferring dark, mercurial permanence and object constancy. "Catch me if you can," says the shape-shifters and the hero's task are often just that; wresting meaning and consciousness from the flux of psychic process. Proteus, the "Old Man of the Sea,"  was sought by heroes because of his gift for prophecy. He assumed every conceivable form in order to elude their grasp until caught and held fast assumes multiple forms to avoid marriage to a mortal. But King Peleus manages to secure her, symbolizing an exchange and binding of power.
The jaguar, lord of the forest, and Olmec ruler or
priest rise to reveal their supernatural kinship in the sacred
turmoil of ecstatic shamanism, Olmec, 900-300 B.C.E., Mexico.

Shape-shifting has a transcendent dimension as well, both dark and light. A deceptive union was central to the birth of King Arthur of Britain, when Merlin gave Uther Pendragon the form of Ygranne's husband, tricking her and conceiving the beloved Once and Future King. Many creatures from the "dark side"- ghosts, demons, comic-book heroes like Spiderman, even Satan himself- are shape-shifters, symbolizing depth experience, compensating the rational psychological attitude. In the supremely popular Harry Potter series young wizards-in-training learn shape-shifting spells in their quest for knowledge rather than for propitiation of the nonrational psyche. The Hindu gods Vishnu/Krishna were prodigious shape-shifters assuming numerous avatars in their battle with evil. And the Greek Tiresias and Dionysus shape-shift into female form, knowing the mystery of love and eros as the Other (EoR, 13:226-8).
"In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God... and the word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory," begins the Gospel of John. In the sacred tradition of Taoism, the path to liberation is also a form of eternal shape -shifting, following a path of endless change, at one with the flux of existence (EoR, 13:227).
Affronted at being ordered to marry a mortal, the sea-goddess
Thetic attempts to escape by turning successively into fire, water,
lion, and serpent. King Peleus wrestling Thetis, by Peithinos, painting at the bottom
of a cup, 6th century B.C.E., Greece.

The image of shape-shifting suggests that life always eludes stasis; the more alteration and myriad forms of life are revealed. A mythopoetic acknowledgment of experience with no boundaries, distinctions or forms, the image expresses possibilities, potentials, demons and shadows, the protean aspect of the psychological process. Those who retain this underworld initiation-mystics, shamans, healers, sorcerers, devils and the mentally ill- inspire both awe and fright as shape-shifting both expresses and threatens the very nature of our being.

Is that body art?

When someone refers a tattoo by a body art, I know that they somewhat either have some themselves or love them! When you mention body art to someone they look at you like you are an alien or they just ignore the fact of your mentioning tattoos. These situations are rather common from what I can see.
Two men were talking behind where I was sitting, taking notes, minding my own business. I happen to have ears that love to be curious so I didn't control what I heard and what I didn't. The conversation was around two adults about one of their teenagers, don't ask me if it was a teenage boy or girl, I have no clue! One the man was very frustrated almost looked worried while the other was confident, seemed more relaxed than the other! The calm guy mentioned "body arts" while the other was staring at him in an odd way. I looked at them both wondering who had tattoos and who didn't... Surprise, surprise, the one that said "body arts" had two sleeves while the other didn't have any visible ones.

Before I had tattoos myself, I didn't pay attention to people that had them or didn't even bothered listening to how people view them. I always liked tattoos, always thought it was some type of art, but it wasn't such a big deal at the time. Now, I have three, planning more and I cannot stop looking at everyone's tattoos! It's becoming an addiction that grows stronger each time. I've gotten ADDICTED! When people say the pain that tattoos cause is addicting, you better believe them! You will never see a person with just one tattoo, it's either two or more!

My first one is on my wrist, two zodiac signs, love them to bits, have to get them touch up, eventually, but.... Not right now! I was a real disaster when I got it, the pain wasn't as bad as everyone would say, but the noise made me jumpy, almost screamed "bloody murder", poor tattoo artist!
The second one is a bit more special... It's a quote, one I wrote myself, translated by my really amazing Italian friend in Italian (so if there is a mistake it's his fault ha-ha), with a feather pen at the end! I'm a writer, I love Italian, so I just had to, it's me. Want to know the quote on the back of my right shoulder... Ask me.
My third one isn't entirely a mistake, at the time it meant a lot! Still, means a lot , it proved me how much and how far I can go with someone I love. It's a name, and I am indeed thinking of covering it up because it is painful to live with it especially if you want to move on. Lucky me, I love the name, I can deal with the fact that is it on my chest.

So to get this chest tattoo covered up I was thinking about symbols from where I'm from! Yes, I'm Celtic meaning I've got Irish blood in me for sure! Brittany is a region in France, but it is the little Ireland of France, more Celtic than anything else. I highly prefer saying I'm Bretonne (people from Brittany) than French. A shamrock (the Irish symbol) and have another symbol to represent Brittany a little more to end with an Irish Gaelic word. I'm still looking for the right word to put on my chest as it is indeed a part of my body that gets to be seen more as I do wear tank tops. It's difficult to find the correct tattoo as it is permanent. One mistake is enough!
I thought about removing it, but it will cost a lot, it will hurt more, and I want that name to be a reminder of certain things like don't make the same "mistake". Once is enough! Next time I put names on my body, it will be my kids' names as a bracelet.

Tattoos are a way to express our feelings, where we are from, what we did. It tells a story, at least my tattoos do. Many of us decide to get them as a reminder of a special event or a family culture... I actually have my friend's roommate who have his country tattooed on his back shoulder, Hawaii. An Island yes, but it is a country and he has it on him. I personally love it! People who have meaningful tattoos have amazing stories behind them as short as the story may be, they are still amazing to me!

Obviously, they are people that have tattoos just for the fun of it. I was talking to someone over the phone last time and the guy told me he saw two girls have Pokemon on their body. Now, PokemonGo has been the addiction that everyone gets addicted to, but to tattoo your body with that... What are you going to tell your future kids? The funny thing was that apparently, they didn't even know how the Pokemon evolved or anything about it for that matter. You could at least know the name of your Pokemon tattoo. Idiotic, but can't judge, I've got an idiot side as well. I just wouldn't want to have a Charmander on my ankle!
Be careful on what you choose, don't regret anything, if you make a "mistake" just learn from it, tell it to people from experience and be sure you get what you think will last forever or else you are stuck with it, have to cover it up or erase them with the laser.

For my part, I want that cover up tattoo, then an anchor with the letter "S" and "E" incorporated inside for my mum, Sonia and both of my brothers, Emilian and Enzo! The anchor is from Brittany as it is close to the sea, so it will remind me of how scared I am of water and how much I get seasick in boats. I actually just realize that when I'm typing this post. Smart me...
Then I'm thinking about getting a simple plane on my left forearm as I do love to travel to places I love, and because planes have been impacting my life in many different ways. I want a souvenir of how much the experiences affected my personality, made me stronger as a person even if it's just a plane to people to me it has meanings. Finally, I would love to get a yin yang on my ankle. I've always been fascinated by it, the good and the evil, the light and the dark, the feminine and the masculine... It's also a reminder of how life and people are. My father isn't a good person whatsoever, but when I look at a yin yang, the dark side also has a bit of light, so if my father is awfully terrible, I know he has some good in him, hiding away, hopefully. Never give up on hope!

If you have ideas on what that Irish word should be, please tell me, I'm interested! I may have really amazing ideas, but we can't have enough of them!

"Tattoos have meanings even the ones you just find pretty! They are on your body for a reason. Art has stories so does tattoos!"

Happy Birthday to my dear mother...

Happy birthday to my mother...

Today is her birthday, yes, and no I won't say her real age, but for a bit now, every year is the same, 39 years old for the rest of her life. She cannot get older than this age, and I cannot let her become an old grumpy woman who hits people with her purse. That is just impossible, for me at least.

My big "sister" has been having an idea of surprising my mother with a suprise birthday party, sadly she came up with the idea late. I've been stuck trying to get a reservation for a table for tomorrow, and trying to get invites... Imagine that one! I can't believe it! It wasn't my idea but I need to make all the calls and keep in touch with everyone because Miss. Big sister can't call anyone herself and invite them. Now, my mother has a new man in her life, I don't talk to him, and will not, he is just not a friend or anything when it comes to me. So first, we were all in a group message and then later on, nothing, no messages, and he doesn't do anything! No ideas were given, and I'm stuck doing all the work. Thank you for such a delightful surprise! I hate it!

My mother has been through so much throughout her life that a surprise sounded nice, it would have been different. Sadly, I don't know how to organize parties or even make any surprises. I'm usually very upfront, and dislike surprises. I know my mother by heart, but let's be honest, there's always something new to learn about this woman. She is my heroe, my rock, the best friend, the most amazing woman I've ever met, and I got the chance to call her mum!

I love her to death, I would do so much for her, and even though there is a few fights, at the end of the day I know I can count on her.

So yeah, this post is quite short, but I've got to get back to my dear mother... Who is waiting for me to be done so we can watch a romantic movie.

"Life is too short to be lived counting the years. Just enjoy the ride and make awesome memories... Happy Birthday!"
