And you think you know it all...

Many of us still believe in certain myths, some of them are completely made up by parents trying to get their children to eat their vegetables.

" Drink your soup if you want to grow up!"

" Eat your carrots, you will be more polite." (This one is common in France)

" You remember Popeye? He ate his spinach, maybe you should do the same!"

The least of common ones can go on forever, and I heard many of them from my dear mother who would try everything to make us do or eat something we didn't want to.

Here are a few myths we hear but aren't true...

#1. Chocolate gives you acne!

Sounds about right, and yet it is far from it. Chocolate itself doesn't give you acne or else I would be covered with it! And no it's not the sugar either! It's actually the dairy in it that may affect your skin especially if you have sensitive skin, skin that reacts fast.

#2. Watching TV will ruin your eyesight.

Said like this, it may sound like an advice, something you should take seriously and yet... Don't be surprised to know it's not going to ruin it. We all hear our parents tell us not to be sitting right in front of the television so you wouldn't ruin your eyesight. It can lead to eyestrain if you exceed some type of monitor watching, but it won't kill your eyesight! It may cause some headaches, slight migraines, or fatigue, that's why it's encouraged to take a few breaks. But no need to exaggerate!

#3. Don't wake up a sleepwalker

Not sure why we started believing it in the first place, but they are at high risk of hurting themselves than by being awoken by someone else. Next time you encounter a sleepwalker, wake him up slowly, calmly, don't go brutal either but make sure they are sitting down on a chair and be sure to know you know what you are getting into because some explanations will be needed. Poor them, they have no idea if it happens or not!

#4. Pyramids were built by slaves

Despite what we read in our history books, this is just another myth! Sad to know we have been lied to ... They were built by free employees or people who already worked in constructions. If you go deeper into the whole history of it all, you will understand the process behind certain traditions, and certain ways of working.

#5. The Loch Ness Monter? Yeah, we saw it!

Some still, to this day, believe it does exist... I mean Scotland is quite known for that, and it may give a little mystery to the place, but let's be real here, did we actually have enough evidence to prove it does exist? Have we got physical evidence? Photos do not count, and toys aren't real.

#6. Sober you will be after coffee

Not sure why you would think it would be true, the only thing it will get you is more hyper, more awake. You will feel more alert after a cup of coffee but don't be fool by the amount of alcohol you drank. Time, on the other hand, will help! Time and time only!

#7. Bulls are active when they see red

Right, sure why not... RED? Just the colour red? You say... Sorry to break the news to you but it's just the fact that you are moving the piece of cloth. They will want to attack just because of the movement in front of them!

#8. Lightning never strikes twice in the same spot

It seems more like lightning will take the shortest route to the ground, no matter if it already landed on that passage once before. So don't believe everything you hear, it says lightning strikes the Empire State Building over a hundred times per year.

Myths, legends, folk stories.... We all know them, some are more common, and others are used as white lies to help parents control their children. Sadly, half of the myths we know aren't always true. Make sure you fully understand and dig into some research if you want to use it to prove a point. No one likes false information!

Top Summer Favourites...

Summer, summer, summer...

Best time to get a tan on, relax, and obviously read (if you are like me, you won't tan but read, yes you will)...
I don't tan, but I read, a whole lot, and buying books, well that's my thing! So I've gathered a list of books that I enjoyed reading or I'm in the process of reading or buying depending on the novel. Note that all the writers I will be mentioning are writers I either appreciate or adore.

I. Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella.
British writer whose writing is easy to read and get into. This novel is about a young teenager who suffers from a certain type of anxiety which keeps her from doing what other kids her age do.
If you have anxiety and want to read something easy and different, go for it! I encourage you to read it. Now, this writer would be more for teenagers, but I believe that books, stories, any of them are meant for everyone including adults. Somehow this book changed my view on social anxiety, made me understand how people suffer around you can suffer from your disorder. It's quite frankly an inspiring book.

II. The Bookshop On The Corner by Jenny Colgan.
Scottish writer who's passion shine through each book, story. It's about a young woman who loses her job and travels to Scotland expecting something and instead a whole new life awaits her.
One novel I'll read again as it is quite inspiring for young writers as well as readers. Her style of reading is very British, very pleasant to read, and easy enough to jump into the story, become the character itself.

III. Meet Me At The Cupcake Cafe by Jenny Colgan.
Yes, another novel from her... This story is about a young woman who's talent are put to the test...
I think what captivated me is how Jenny shows that life isn't always what we expect even if we are "good" at what we do. But there is a bright side to every downfall. Now, I'm still in the process of reading it and it seems like I cannot put the book down, not one bit.

The last one is actually three books as it is a trilogy. I will put the British edition as well as the US edition. I always get the British one but oh well... The author being Santa Montefiore and one of my favourite author! She always managed to capture the right feeling, the right word to make you feel all types of emotions.

IV. Song Of Love And War (UK edition) The Irish Girl (US edition) if you cannot find this one another title came for the US edition, The Girl In The Castle.  BOOK I
Daughters Of The Castle Deverill  ( UK edition) The Daughters Of Ireland (US edition which is coming out in mid-August in the US). BOOK II
The Last Secret Of The Deverill (UK edition) The US edition hasn't come out yet but I'm sure you can find the novel anyways. BOOK III
I won't be explaining much about these books as I'm still in the process of buying them. I want the original version so it's taking a bit more time than expected. Each one of her books has been taking a part of me into another world, leaving the reality behind.
It is quite the original list of books but these ones are the ones I've been into this summer. They are worth the time and money, haven't been disappointed in any of choice yet, and hopefully, you will found my list as captivating as I was.

It had to happen again!

Happy Friday the 13th...

As many of you know, it's today, and for a lot of you, it is considered an unlucky day! Some developed a phobia out of it, paraskevidekatriaphobia or fear of Friday the 13th. If you are indeed one to worry about this unlucky day, I suggest you stay in bed all day to escape any bad luck that may come your way. Even though in 1976, New Yorker Daz Baxter was apparently so afraid of Friday the 13th decided the safest place to stay was his bed. However, Mr. Baxter was killed when the floor of his apartment block collapsed that day. Be careful, your bed may not just be the greatest idea!
If you do not care whatsoever, please do embrace your Friday as it is, indeed, just another Friday.

I don't personally take pride in worrying about that day, but I still try to stay away from any "bad luck" situation. Sadly, a lot happens on Friday the 13th, for instance, in November 2015, in Paris, a series of terrorist attacks happened. In 2010, lightning struck 13 years of age boy from Suffolk on Friday the 13th at 13:13 or 1:30 P.M. That's called horrible luck! To go back to History, WWII, one of the most destructive of Nazi Germany bombing campaign occurred on the 13th, Queen Elizabeth, and King George VI were at tea. Five bombs struck the palace, on of which destroyed the interior of the Royal Chapel. Another ruptured a water main and three people were injured, one fatally.
For music lovers, Friday, September 13th, 1996... I was just a few months old, the rapper Tupac dies from gunshot injuries in a Las Vegas hospital. That obviously made a lot of people think it was fake and some will say that he is still alive, hiding away. I don't know about this theory... And finally, to sum up, the tragedies... In 2012, cruising off the Tuscan coast turned chaotic as the Costa Concordia cruise ship struck a reef and began to tilt. It starts out by passengers evacuating by lifeboats, but let's just say that the ship ended up sinking and survivor had to be airlifted to shore by helicopter. A massive salvage operation took 19 hours to raise the ship from the reef where it came to rest. The captain was arrested for manslaughter and for abandoning the ship instead of directing the evacuation.

Friday the 13th has some crazy stories, some believable, others not so much. Yet, many of us believe in the theory of having bad luck on the 13th... Some hotel such as the Carlton hotel in London misses out on the thirteenth floor.  Many don't want to travel that day leaving the flying company a bit "stuck".  The number of property transaction decline on Friday 13, don't sell or buy a house that day unless you want bad luck.

But it also has some perks... It isn't all that bad... Some good things happened as well like:
1. Hollywood arrived! The sign was unveiled on the 13th. At the time it was to advertise a housing development, now it's just one of the biggest tourist attraction!
2. Amazing day for the Friday the 13th film franchise! A lot of money was made! GOOD JOB!

3. Athens took back from fascist powers in WWII! Amazing for history! Italy invaded Greece but they were pushed back by Greek forces! Then came the German who helped out and occupied Greece until help from the American, Russian, and British moved in driving the Germans north. That was in October 1944, on Friday the 13th, Athens was back to Greece and not fascism allowed!
4.First equal opportunity employment act for government workers!!!!! President Johnson signed an executive order meant to rid the U.S government of discrimination on account of gender!

Anyways, Friday the 13th is a myth, nothing has proved it was an unlucky day. You believe it or you don't, it's up to you! Frankly, I don't care much, but I still manage to worry a little...
This "unlucky day" originated by different ideas like:
Apparently, Friday is an unlucky day and 13 an unlucky number, you add them up and here you got Friday the 13th!
In numerology 13 is considered to be an irregular number and is also the number of witches you need to form a coven (if you believe in that stuff).

Obviously, everyone has a different story to back it up! Nothing dramatic happened that day for me, so I can't judge or take it into consideration. All I know is that I ain't working today and I believe I'll be safer home than at work with some terrible customers. Maybe I would have been mean to one of them.

Let's play the safe card!
